Spring is in Bloom: Discover the Most Beautiful Flowering Trees in the Eastern Shawnee National Forest

Welcome to Spring in the Shawnee National Forest

Spring in Southern Illinois is nothing short of spectacular. As the forest awakens, rolling hills and sandstone bluffs come alive with soft whites, vibrant pinks, and golden hues. The Eastern Shawnee National Forest offers one of the most underrated spring bloom displays in the Midwest.

Whether you’re hiking through Rim Rock, Garden of the Gods, exploring Bell Smith Springs, or simply enjoying your morning coffee on the porch, you’re surrounded by nature’s spring show.

And the best part? Many of these beautiful flowering trees can be found right on the private acreage of Walnut Hill and Prairie House homes at Arcadia Acres—no travel required.

The 4 Must-See Spring Blooming Trees

1. Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)

Bloom Time: Mid to Late April
What to Look For: Soft white (sometimes pink) four-petaled blossoms layered beneath tall hardwood canopies

Dogwoods are one of the most iconic spring trees in the Shawnee National Forest. They thrive along woodland edges and shaded trails, creating a soft, glowing effect as they bloom beneath taller trees.

Where to See Them: Rim Rock Trail, Bell Smith Springs, and throughout wooded areas near Arcadia Acres

2. Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

Bloom Time: Early to Mid April
What to Look For: Bright pink to purple blossoms that grow directly along branches and trunks

Redbuds are often the first trees to announce spring’s arrival. Their vivid color stands out dramatically against still-bare forest backdrops.

Where to See Them: Roadsides, trail edges, and open forest areas throughout the Shawnee National Forest. The Red buds are flowering right now at Arcadia Acres!

3. Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea)

Bloom Time: Early April
What to Look For: Delicate white blossoms with fine, airy petals

Often overlooked, serviceberry trees offer one of the earliest and most elegant spring blooms. Their subtle beauty pairs perfectly with early morning hikes.

Where to See Them: Forest edges and openings near Pounds Hollow and Burden Falls

4. Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera)

Bloom Time: Late April to May
What to Look For: Large greenish-yellow flowers shaped like tulips high in the canopy

These towering trees are some of the tallest in the forest. While their blooms can be harder to spot from below, they are one of the most unique and rewarding finds.

Where to See Them: Mature forests throughout the Shawnee, especially near Bell Smith Springs and deep wooded trails.

Bonus Native Bloomer

Bonus Native Bloomer: Keep an eye out for black haw, a native small tree with creamy white spring flower clusters that can be found in the Bell Smith Springs area. It’s a quieter woodland bloomer, but a beautiful part of the Eastern Shawnee spring display.
