Morel Mushroom Hunting Southern Illinois: When & Where to Find Morels Near Shawnee National Forest (2026 Guide)

Morel Mushroom Hunting In Southern Illinois: Why Spring Is Prime Time

Morel mushroom hunting in Southern Illinois is one of the most anticipated outdoor traditions of the year. Each spring, the hardwood forests surrounding the eastern Shawnee region begin producing one of the most sought‑after wild mushrooms in North America: the Morel.

Southern Illinois consistently attracts foragers because the region warms earlier than northern parts of the state. The mix of rolling hills, creek bottoms, and mature hardwood forests creates ideal growing conditions for morels.

If you are planning a morel mushroom hunting trip in Southern Illinois, preparation and timing are everything.

When Is Morel Season in Southern Illinois?

  • Soil temperatures reach approximately 50–55°F

  • There has been steady spring rainfall

Where to Find Morels in Southern Illinois

Since many experienced hunters rarely share exact locations, a little strategy goes a long way to experiencing a successful hunt. We find that the best overall strategies often include searching near:

  • Dead or dying elm trees

  • Old apple orchards

  • South‑facing slopes early in the season

  • Creek bottoms and moist wooded areas

  • Areas with fallen timber or past disturbance

The hardwood forests throughout the eastern Shawnee region provide excellent terrain for both beginners and experienced foragers.

Walk slowly. Scan carefully. Morels blend remarkably well with leaf litter.

Here is Marty holding an ENORMOUS Chicken of the Woods found near Prairie House. We kept seeing this orange color from a distance....one day we went to see what it was, thinking maybe some trash had blown in. Imagine our surprise!

This Reishi mushroom was found growing wild in the woods behind Walnut Hill. Reishi are best known to be excellent for reducing inflammation when dried and infused in a tea or, what I do is blend a little powdered Reishi in my morning protein shake.
